Coping With Divorce and Separation: Where to Start?

Separation and divorce rarely arrive with a clear plan attached. One day you’re managing a relationship, and the next you’re managing the end of one, often while still holding down work, parenting, and everything else life asks of you. If you’re in the middle of that right now, this is for you.

Start with the basics, not the whole picture

It’s tempting to try to figure out everything at once: the legal side, the emotional side, the children, the finances, the future. That’s rarely possible, and trying to hold it all in your head at the same time tends to make everything feel heavier. It can help to focus on just the next decision in front of you, rather than the whole road ahead.

Give the emotional side somewhere to go

Whatever you’re feeling right now, whether that’s grief, relief, anger, guilt, or all of it at once, none of it needs to be managed alone. Having somewhere steady to process those feelings, separate from the practical logistics, tends to make the practical side easier to handle too.

Protecting your children without losing yourself

If children are involved, it’s natural for their wellbeing to come first. Just remember that looking after your own wellbeing isn’t in competition with that. Parents who have somewhere to process their own experience are often better placed to stay calm and present for their children through a difficult time.

You don’t have to work this out alone

I offer counselling for people going through separation and divorce, in person near Truro and Redruth, and online across the UK. I’ve also written a book on this subject, When Divorce Gets Messy, which many clients find useful alongside sessions.
